Screening of Monuments Men

Euro Media Forum, The U.S. Embassy in Malta and Eden Cinemas presents a special screening of Monuments Men followed by a discussion. The film begins at 6 p.m. (1800) on Thursday, 6th March, at Eden Cinemas.

Monuments Men is a 2014 American-German war film directed by George Clooney and an adaptation of Robert M. Edsel’s 2009 book, The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History. Based on a true story, the film follows an Army unit nicknamed the Monuments Men tasked with finding and saving pieces of art and culturally important items before losing them to Hitler during World War II.

Moderator Fleur Vella, U.S. Embassy speakers Nathan Austin and LCDR Karsten Spies will give insight into the people who saved items of European cultural heritage during WWII and their legacy. The discussion will delve into Hitler’s rationale for appropriating art from Nazi-controlled areas. The speakers will also explore lessons learned from the Monuments Men in the context of modern conflicts like that in Syria which threaten the world’s cultural heritage. The audience is invited to participate in the discussion and ask questions.
