Locations Session

Second series of the One Locations Fits All – Location Management & Scouting Workshop to take place – 10th & 11th November 2012

The Malta Film Commission as part of its objective to create training opportunities to cater for the needs of the film industry, is organising a second scouting and location management workshop with internationally reknowned location manager Christian McWilliams known for his involvement in scouting for a number of feature films including ‘the Merchant of Shanghai’, ‘Mission Impossible 4’, ‘A Team’ and ‘World War Z’ which brought Christian to Malta, his favourite location yet. He currently lives in London and has recently been scouting on the latest JJ ABRAMS Star Trek film. This scouting workshop will take place on Saturday and Sunday 10th and 11th November 2012, at SmartCity Malta, Ricasoli.

This 2-day workshop will tackle a number of topics from how to search for locations, to planning and on-set logistics to photographing a location and role of visual effects in scouting. Practical sessions will be included and a location scout will take place. Location scouting is a common film practice and any large part of any production regardless of budget or style will seek to find more interesting, different and perfect locations; to do this location scouts need to work closely with the director and the production designer during preproduction to find and secure the creative vision expressed by them. The role also involves negotiating with owners of locations and once filming has begun they are in charge of managing all aspects the shoot, ensuring that every location is handed back to its owners in a satisfactory condition after the shoot. In addition, they are also responsible for public relations and the safety of crew on location. Participants will learn the tricks of the trade and have the basic understanding and tools to put into practice what they have learned. Upon completing the course, participants will receive a Locations Scout Workshop training certificate from the Malta Film Commission.

Participation is open to individuals and students who would like to learn more about Scouting and Location Management and wish to have a more active role in this field. A nominal administration fee of €25 is applicable, reservations are on a first come first served basis.
