Interview - Lee Deaville

MaltaFilmIcon talks with Lee Deaville - writer and director of 'Waiting for the End of the World'

1) How long did it take to complete this short?

From start to finish, 'Waiting for the End of the World' took about 3 months.

2) What's the real meaning behind this film?

I like the audience to find their own meanings; to take subtexts, issues and themes from the film and formulate their own conclusions.

3) In your opinion what makes a screenplay satisfiable to film?

A good screenplay must have a strong structure, sense of direction and rich characters that are relatable. A good story might not always make a good film.

4) As a director what do you look for in films?

Same as the last one really, I look for structure and genre characteristics. I love context and atmosphere too. I love to watch a story unfold, and to have challenged me.

5) Can you share with us some of your experiences and limitations while working in films?

I am still very limited by budget and logistics - but that's half the fun. I like finding ways of making films work. Often, limits can be your friend, as they can dictate how a project might grow. I'm interested in socio-realist drama because of its roots in English working-class society, and how it's easy to tell involving stories without having to break the bank. Of my experiences, I've found that you learn more from your failures than your successes, and that you are only as good as your last film.

6) Do you think short movies or feature films are still an effective tool to send out messages to individuals/groups/societies?

Absolutely, and I think that through the likes of Vimeo and Youtube, and a growing international interest in short film festivals such as Raindance and Festival du Court Metrage Clermont Ferrand, short film is becoming even more prominent. Many TV commercials take inspiration from shorts that you can see online. Short films are definitely the future.

7) Any future projects?

I have written a few new projects, and am just trying to find the time to get out there and shoot them!
